Often the roadblocks in our path to success are placed there by us. And one of the worst things we do to hinder our efforts to improve our present circumstance is procrastination. We stall, we put off, we create reasons we can't get something done.
We've all heard the joke: "I'm really going to stop procrastinating! Starting tomorrow." We giggle but in the meantime our lives, hopes and dreams lay dormant.
And we do this for a number of reasons. We're lazy or bored. We're facing a task we find unpleasant. But the bottom line is that procrastination is a thief we allow into our personal space that steals our goals and ambitions. Indeed, a professor at the Univ. of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business says 95% of us procrastinate at times, with 15% to 20% being habitual offenders. But there is a solution.
For the job seeker there are few things harder to master than how to write a resume that yields return on investment. Ask five personnel professionals their opinion and you'll get widely varying answers.
There is no slam-dunk way to build a resume, which is no excuse to throw anything on to a piece of paper and put it in front of a prospective employer. If anything it should inspire you to do everything you can to assemble a document that reflects your abilities clearly and concisely.
Now and then everyone finds themselves mired in a rut. It can be a case where you're bloc ked on some phase of a project or assignment and just can't muster any forward progress.
Or you might be feeling stale and low on energy, unable to mount any real enthusiasm. Obviously neither is conducive to getting your work done.
No matter the reason, when we're stuck in neutral the notion of climbing out of that rut seems as daunting as moving a mountain with a teaspoon. The more we delay the bigger that mountain seems to get. So while all this back-channel intrigue is playing out in our heads we're not getting any closer to the results we need to achieve.
